Schloss Steinfurt

The castle at Steinfurt, is one of the oldest and powerful moated castles in the Münsterland – and one of the most beautiful! With extraordinary character because of the flat landscape without any high hills or cliffs the architect has created moats and an artificial island, where the moated castle is located on.

In the same way the noble people created the foundation for the city Steinfurt. Under the guard of the castle, the market settlement "Stat to Stenvorde" has been established. Over the years , the Steinfurter castle has been destroyed multiple times then rebuild and expanded and therefore it shows diverse elements from Romanesque, Rococo and Neo-classicism.

Even today ancestors of the builder still live here: the family of Fürsten zu Bentheim und Steinfurt.
